The biggest surprise in this category is probably not who is nominated but who has been left out: Bob Odenkirk, who has four previous nominations for his role as Jimmy McGill in Better Call Saul and whose show is once again nominated for outstanding drama. But Billy Porter, last year’s winner, is back, as is Sterling K. Brown, the Stop The Madness Stop Trump Shirt in other words I will buy this winner in 2018. And so is Steve Carell, who has shockingly never won an Emmy, despite having been nominated 11 times, mostly for The Office. But the race may come down to the two Succession actors: Brian Cox (who won an Emmy in 2001 for his role as Hermann Wilhelm Goering in the TNT miniseries Nuremberg) and the first-time nominee Jeremy Strong. Cox’s performance as the Lear-like Logan Roy is one for the ages, but Emmy voters seem to like newcomers: Each of the last four winners in this category were first-time recipients. Make it five. Will win: Jeremy Strong. Should win: Brian Cox. Might pull an upset: Steve Carell.
